Behind every good building is a great client and 8 Hotels is a testament to what is possible when the visions of Client and Architect align.

LONG STORY SHORT

INSIDE

The equally eclectic and whimsical interiors with 35 unique guest rooms showcase art-deco, mid-century and retro influences – the classical periods seen by the 1903 heritage-listed building – coalescing as one.  White brickwork; openable windows; banquette seating; laundry facilities; an indoor-outdoor reception and sunken lounge; an enviable communal rooftop terrace and a lush rooftop garden that are also a visual feast to the neighbours, create a homely feel.  The large openings and church-inspired interior details reconnect the inside with the neighbouring buildings that were all once part of the Marist Brothers precinct.  The poetry wall and the grand stairwell portraits that feature the notables in Surry Hills’ history become the ‘living museum’ of the local area.

SUSTAINABILITY

Despite the light-deprived infill site, the new – including the grand stairwell with operable skylights above – is flooded with sunlight, naturally cross-ventilated and adequately shaded with insulated glazing.  A combination of well-insulated, traditional building systems with good sustainable properties like cavity brick wall, steel-clad timber wall and timber floor, and locally sourced fittings and fixtures, are used. ⬛️
